Reconciliation SA is proud to present its First Among Equals campaign. In this campaign, we support Constitutional recognition of Australia’s First People—are you going to be part of the change?
South Australia has taken a great step forward by acknowledging our state’s Aboriginal people as the traditional owners of the lands and waters. This long-overdue amendment acknowledges past injustices and recognises the continuing importance of Aboriginal heritage and culture.
The next step is our national Constitution. Our Constitution excludes Australia’s first people—and in this omission, denies their very existence. In addition, the constitution also allows states to ban people from voting based on their race. The Constitution includes a section that can be used to pass laws that discriminate against people based on their race. This ‘race power’ clause has been used to disadvantage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the past. It’s time to move forward change our founding document, for the sake of equality and justice.
Do you want to be part of the conversation? Reconciliation SA is developing a resource called Recognition Circles to help you get the ball rolling with your social group, work mates, sporting club—you name it! Let us know that you’re interested by filling out the form to the right. We’ll get in contact and help you start the process.
It’s time for change: Let’s Talk Recognition.
