Eddie Hughes MP has been the Member for Giles since 2014. The electorate of Giles is the largest state electorate, covering the major industrial and population centre of Whyalla in the south, and extending to the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in the far north.

Along-time Whyalla resident, Eddie has raised his three children, Liam, Sinead and Ciaran with his partner Kathryn.

After leaving school, he worked in a variety of labouring and semi-skilled jobs for ten years before attending university as a mature age student. After graduating from his degree, he worked with injured workers as a rehabilitation consultant. He has also worked as a university tutor and a contract report writer for the Department of Correctional Services, preparing pre-sentence and parole reports.

Eddie spent 23 years on the Whyalla City Council as an elected member, with a couple of terms as the Deputy Mayor. He also spent a decade on the Whyalla Economic Development Board and was the board’s deputy chair for most of that time.

He was appointed to the Aboriginal Lands Standing Committee after his election, and as part of his electorate duties, has been a regular visitor to the APY Lands.

Eddie strongly believes in a fair go for all. That is why reconciliation, in addition to a wide range of other endeavours, is needed to address the unacceptable gap that exists on so many levels. Eddie acknowledges that we have come a long way, but there is so much more that still needs to be done.
