Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial
Message from the Chair
Ms Marj Tripp ex Women's Royal Australian Naval Service
This memorial is a significant and fitting acknowledgement of the contribution made by many thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to the war and peacekeeping missions of the Australian armed forces, from the Boer war to the present day.
For too long the efforts of these people have been laregly unrecognised. It is time to honour them appropriately and for their story to be told.
We invite you to join us on a journey of recognition and support.
The unique memorial will be the first significant acknowledgement of the enormous sacrifice made by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the defence of Australia, and on peacekeeping missions, from the Boer War to the present day.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial will stand proudly within the military heartland of our state, adjacent to the Torrens Parade Ground, and alongside the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial.
The Memorial Committee selected the memorial concept prepared by artists Tony Rosella, Lee-Ann Tjunypa Buckskin and Michelle Nikou, following an open and competitive process.
Commissioning the memorial is being coordinated by a committee comprising Aboriginal war veterans, Aboriginal ex-servicemen and women, and is supported by the Returned and Services League, the Vietnam Veterans’ Association and the State and Commonwealth Governments.
