Meet the composer of Australia's first Indigenous Opera
1pm - 3pm Wednesday July 1
Deborah Cheetham is a renowned Aboriginal opera singer, internationally and nationally. Her contribution to Australia has been recognised most recently in June 2014 as deserving of an award as an officer in the Order of Australia (AO).
Deborah is a charismatic speaker. Join her in a unique event in which she will talk about her personal journey and her landmark opera Pecan Summer, which will be performed in Adelaide at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Grote Street between 3 - 5 July 2014.
Pecan Summer was written and composed by Deborah. It tells the powerful story about the summer of 1939 when the Yorta Yorta were forced to leave their homeland, known as the Cummeragunja walk-off, in which Deborah’s grandparents were involved; and continues up until the time of the Apology to the Stolen Generations. It explores our shared history in Australia.
As part of her presentation Deborah will include video clips and discuss the powerful connection between Aboriginal culture and opera and the importance of reconciliation through contemporary Australian Opera.
