The program is aimed at middle and senior school students and will take place in the Northern and Southern metro areas of Adelaide, as well as Mt Gambier and Whyalla.
Year 8 and 9 students will explore the Tjukurrpa (kinship) model with a respected South Australian traditional man from Coober Pedy, John Lochowiak. In addition, they will explore anti-racism strategies supported by Amnesty International, and they will start to develop Reconciliation Action Plans that they can bring back to school for follow up.
Year 10 and 11 students will have an opportunity to think about the way in which Indigenous communities make decisions and the importance of recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Constitution.
Student leaders, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, are encouraged to participate in the congress and facilitate change in their schools and communities.
The dates for the congress are as follows:
Northern Metropolitan: Middle School August 13th, Senior School August 16th
Southern Metropolitan: Middle School September 3rd, Senior School September 11th
Whyalla: Middle School September 19th, Senior School September 18th
Mt Gambier: Middle School October 30th, Senior School October 31st
