Reconciliation South Australia believes that courageous leadership across all sectors of the community is key to the success of the reconciliation agenda. Within state and local government, the business community and the education not-for-profit sectors, there are examples where such leadership has resulted in significant benefits for Aboriginal people; as employees, as clients, as citizens. Courageous leaders challenge the status quo, promote innovation and creativity and understand the benefits of equity of opportunity and mentoring and support as a means of realising individual potential. The Reconciliation Ambassadors Program will identify individuals who have a demonstrated commitment to the principles of reconciliation within the community. The Program will provide a framework to promote their activities as best practice and provide them with the tools to extend the reach of their commitment throughout their sectors. Reconciliation Ambassadors will promote inclusive and empowering language, implement programs to increase the Aboriginal participation, challenge their peers to adopt the principles of reconciliation and advocate for progressive policies that support self determination and acknowledge Australia’s shared history. At Government House on 28 May 2009, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR Governor of South Australia and Patron of the Reconciliation Ambassadors Program, precided over a ceremony to announce the five inaugural Reconciliation Ambassadors. Ambassadors Ms Janet Giles, Secretary of SA Unions, for her enduring personal commitment to reconciliation has seen her take on countless roles as an activist and advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Mr Lewis Owens, Chief Executive Officer of ETSA Utilities for his commitment to driving the principles of reconciliation through his organisation and amongst his peers in order to increase opportunities and improve outcomes for Aboriginal employees. Honorary Reconciliation Ambassadors Ms Shirley Peisley AM, a Ngarrindjeri woman from Kingston in the South East of the State, for her indefatigable commitment to reconciliation that has taken her on a journey from political demonstration to advocacy and representation and to positions of leadership including a number of year as Co-chair of Reconciliation South Australia.
