RECONCILIATION FEATURE
RECONCILIATION IN ACTION - LE FEVRE HIGH SCHOOL
Highlights of Le Fevre High School’s focus on Reconciliation
include:
|
*
|
Including Aboriginal Studies in the curriculum
for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Students
visit the Migration Museum and Camp Coorong. Indigenous guest
speakers are invited to our school to share their stories
and family history with students. Many non-Indigenous students
report that doing this subject changes their lives and the
understanding they gain inspires them to take on Reconciliation
in their lives either personally or professionally. |
|
* |
Obtaining a DEST grant for Working
Together for Indigenous Youth (WTIY). A program was developed
by David Wilson (Indigenous Film Maker) and Louise Mather
(Teacher) and trialled as short courses with Indigenous students.
|
|
* |
Planning for an Indigenous Skills Centre
- The Indigenous New Media Centre will include Industry standard
equipment to expand and provide Certificate 2 competencies
in Film for Indigenous students in the District, neighbourhood
schools and community groups. |
|
* |
Obtaining ICAN funding to maintain and develop
individual programs for Indigenous students at LFHS with a
strong health and well-being focus. |
|
* |
Working with SAPOL to deliver the living
skills program to help develop positive relationships between
Indigenous people and the Police. |
|
* |
Running workshops with Kurruru Indigenous
Youth Performing Arts and Kura Yerlo. |
|
* |
Holding a ‘Nunga Parent Night’
each term. |
|
* |
Establishing a Yurrekaityarindi partnership
to ensure Aboriginal involvement in decision making and management
of the school. |
|
* |
Supporting students to create a colourful
school mural addressing four themes: Active Kids; Locality—Port

Celebrating 2007 Reconciliation Week with
a whole school focus on commemorating the 40th Anniversary
of the 1967 Referendum. Students developed a timeline of significant
dates and events relating to Indigenous history. This was
displayed in the foyer of our school and classes used the
timeline to answer a set of questions and learn about things
such as Segregation, Assimilation, Protection, Freedom Rides,
1967 Referendum. |

Coordinating a Reconciliation Week Assembly
in 2007. Aunty Josie Agius and Anthony Wilson (a LFHS student)
did the Kaurna welcome. Farren Wills a year 9 Indigenous student
at our school gave information about the life of an important
activitist Charles Perkins (who was also an old scholar of
LeFevre Technical College). Our assembly highlighted the need
for more Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians to work
side by side to move our nation forward on the important issue
of Reconciliation. |

Using a Kaurna name for the school’s
Ice Hockey Team. Le Fevre Lightning – Karndo. Students
have been involved with selecting a jersey design, creating
a logo and selecting a team name. The students came up with
the name ‘Le Fevre Lightning – Karndo’.
To be able to use the Kaurna word for lightning – Karndo
- we requested and received permission from the Kaurna Warra
Pintyandi (KYP) group. Students agreed it was an important
acknowledgement of the Kaurna people. |
