National Reconciliation Week: 27 May to 3 June
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are warned that this website may contain images and voices of deceased persons.
The Bringing them home: The 'Stolen Children' report (1997) included the findings and recommendations of the National Inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children From Their Families. The report recommended that a National Sorry Day be held each year on May 26 May "to commemorate the history of forcible removals and its effects." As a result of this recommendation the National Sorry Day Committee, a community-based organisation, was formed.

Reconciliation Week Breakfast
Be the change; I am the change
Reconciliation South Australia believes that courageous leadership across all sectors of the community is key in closing the gap in areas such as health, education and employment. Within state and local government, the business community and the education not-for-profit sectors, there are examples where such leadership has resulted in significant benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities; as employees, as clients and suppliers and as members of the community within which they conduct their business.
To mark the beginning of Reconciliation Week 2010, Felicity-Ann Lewis, Mayor of the City of Marion and President of the Local Government Association will host this not-to-be-missed breakfast on behalf of Reconciliation South Australia. Service to commemorate Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Veterans
An Aboriginal Commemorative service to remember the sacrifice of Aboriginal people in the service of our nation. This event also considers the dimension of their voluntary contribution made at a time when Aboriginal men and women did not enjoy full rights of citizenship and were discriminated against in an appalling way. In spite of this they have volunteered to serve in every conflict in which our nation has been involved.
Speaker John Lochowiak will explain the history of his great grandfather, Arthur Thomas Walker a Ngarrindjeri man who enlisted for World War I aged 33 and was killed in France on 16 august 1916 leaving a wife and children.
This is an excellent event for school children who will come to understand the depth on sacrifice made by Aboriginal people to a nation that did not truly recognise or accept them.
Attendees are invited to join veterans, friends and family at the historic Torrens Parade Ground Drill Hall for morning tea at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Date: Friday 28 May 2010 Time: 10am to 11am Location: State National War Memorial, cnr North Terrace and Kintore Avenue, Adelaide Cost: FREE Contact: Keith Harrison, Department of Veterans Affairs T: 8232 0322 E: marketing@rsisa.org.au
